Mumbai, Apr 10: Celebrated cinematographer Pankaj Kumar, known for his visually arresting work in Haider, Tumbbad, Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, and Farzi, is stepping into the director's chair for the first time with the upcoming psychological thriller Khauf. Ahead of the series’ release, Kumar opened up about what made actress Monika Panwar the undeniable choice for the lead role.
Set against the backdrop of a bustling city, Khauf tells the haunting tale of Madhu, a young woman hoping to start afresh in a new hostel—only to discover a sinister presence lurking in her room, forcing her to face terrifying truths from her past.

Reflecting on the casting process, Pankaj Kumar recalled how the team sifted through countless auditions before unanimously selecting Monika. “There were endless discussions, hours of reviewing tapes, but the moment Monika’s audition came on screen, there was no doubt—she was Madhu. We knew it instantly,” he said.
He went on to praise the commitment of the cast, noting how months of intense rehearsals brought a remarkable authenticity to the performances. “As a director, it was a joy to work with actors who were completely immersed in their characters. Their natural ease and connection on set made every scene come alive. I feel incredibly lucky that every actor was chosen purely on talent—they were cast because they truly belonged to the roles.”
Alongside Monika Panwar, Khauf features an impressive ensemble including Rajat Kapoor, Abhishek Chauhan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, and Shilpa Shukla. The series is expected to offer a gripping, edge-of-the-seat experience, blending psychological depth with supernatural suspense.
Marking the directorial debut of Pankaj Kumar and co-director Surya Balakrishna, Khauf also introduces Smita Singh as a first-time creator and showrunner. The series is executive-produced by Sanjay Routray and Sarita Patil under the Matchbox Shots banner.
Khauf premieres exclusively on Prime Video on April 18.
