Udupi, Apr 12: The Lombard Memorial Hospital (LMH) Group of Institutions, Udupi, held its graduation ceremony and annual day celebration at the LMH Multi-purpose Hall on April 12.

The convocation ceremony commenced with the graduation march, followed by the inauguration through the lighting of the lamp by dignitaries.

Dr Ashok H, district surgeon at the District Hospital, Ajjarkad, in his inaugural note said, “Earliest this field was called as staff nurse, but the government gave special recognition as nursing officer. You have special responsibility in society. Everyone recognises a doctor's work, but nobody recognises nursing work. Your main aim is promotion of health, prevention of illness. You must follow the instructions of doctors. Nurses spend more time with patients than doctors. Quality care is utmost important. You must maintain the confidentiality of patients. Primordial prevention is more important, you have to convince the patient and patient attender. Mother Teresa served patients without any personal gain, therefore serving the people.”

Hemachandra, Bishop of CSI KSD, in his introductory note said, “The students will take bigger steps in their life. Students must have commitment. Today is a day where parents' dreams and student’s expectations come true. Along with commitment, patience is also important. Everyone comes to you with one or the other problems. After god, people place their trust in doctors and nurses. You are stepping into such a responsible position. You serve the people. It is only with god's blessing the Lombard Hospital is able to provide in this competitive world. Students must have commitment and respond to and communicate with patients.”

Dr Sushil Jathanna, director of LMH, in his presidential note said, “I take this opportunity to congratulate all the graduates. Today is a day of sadness for us and celebration. Sadness comes from the heart, students studied here for years and therefore we are sad that we are parting today and happiness is that the teenager who entered here is flying as full-fledged graduates. There will be challenges and opportunities for each one of you. You will face challenges of various ethical dilemmas. But I am sure with the training in this institution you are ready to face those challenges. The opportunity of securing a job, earning, repaying your education loan is all open now. You should not forget that you are equal to any doctors and medical staff. Treat your patients with respect, compassion and empathy. A life is a lifelong learning, every day you learn. Sum of the team is greater than the sum of the individual. Don't forget that you should be a good human being. Committing yourself makes a difference in people's lives. Also, do not forget the teachers who have taught you.”

The convocation certificates, mementoes, and medals were distributed to the graduates by chief guest Dr Ashok H, Dr Sushil Jathanna, and Hemachandra Kumar, along with other dignitaries on the occasion. Merit awards were also distributed on the occasion.

The convocation ceremony commenced with the prayer by Ivan D’Soans and invocation by fourth-year students of BSc Nursing. A tribute to Late Dr Ganesh Kamath was held on the occasion.
