New Delhi, Apr 26: Just three minutes of moderate daily activity such as housework or grocery shopping may significantly reduce the risk of heart-related issues in older adults, according to a new international study.

Researchers from the University of Sydney, in collaboration with UK institutions, found that incidental physical activity (IPA) like cooking, cleaning, or gardening can offer heart health benefits, especially for those who do not engage in structured exercise.

“Any daily IPA of moderate or vigorous intensity was associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk,” the study noted, emphasizing that even small amounts of movement can make a difference.

The study, published in the journal Circulation, analyzed data from 24,139 self-identified non-exercisers who wore wrist monitors. Findings showed those who engaged in at least three minutes of moderate activity daily had a reduced risk of heart attacks, strokes, or cardiovascular-related death.

Researchers stressed the importance of incorporating several short bursts of activity throughout the day for long-term heart health benefits.
