Moodbidri: Requiem Mass, interfaith meet held in honour of Pope Francis

Moodbidri, Apr 29: A solemn Requiem Mass was held at Corpus Christi Church here on Tuesday, April 29 for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis, the beloved head of the Universal Catholic Church.

The Holy Eucharistic celebration at 4 pm was led by Fr Onil D’Souza, vicar forane of St Matthew deanery, along with other vicars from the deanery.

Following the Mass, a condolence meeting was held at Samaja Mandir, Moodbidri, organised by St Matthew deanery in collaboration with the Catholic Sabha. The programme included floral tributes, condolence messages, and reflections on the Pope’s enduring legacy. The interfaith gathering saw participation from leaders of various communities who paid tribute to the late Pontiff.

Dr Mohan Alva, chairman of Alva’s Education Trust, lauded Pope Francis for his humility and compassion for the marginalized. He noted the Pope’s efforts to foster peace and his outreach to people of all backgrounds. “He mingled freely with common people and provided exemplary leadership to the Catholic Church,” Dr Alva said.

Abu Salam Puttige highlighted the Pope’s role in promoting interfaith harmony and praised his efforts to hold inter-religious meetings that bridged divides and fostered unity.

Fr Onil D’Souza reflected on the Pope’s courage in setting aside traditional Papal protocols to connect with ordinary people. He emphasised the Pope’s message of mercy and called on the attendees to emulate his virtues.

Rajesh Kadlakere compered the programme, Manohar Cutinha welcomed the gathering, and Alwyn Rodrigues proposed the vote of thanks.
