Chennai, Apr 30: As Punjab Kings prepare to lock horns with Chennai Super Kings in a high-stakes Indian Premier League (IPL) clash at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday, fast bowling coach James Hopes emphasised the need for his team to deliver their best to keep playoff hopes alive.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Hopes stressed that the team must take each match as it comes and not get ahead of themselves. “The biggest thing for us is we know what can happen in a few weeks if we play well, but our focus has to be on the first ball of tomorrow night,” he said.

With CSK languishing at the bottom of the table, Hopes warned against complacency. “All teams in this competition are so dangerous that on their night, they can beat anyone. So it would be foolish of us to look too far ahead.”
He also addressed concerns regarding the team's middle order, which has largely remained underutilized due to strong top-order performances. “They are training very well. I won’t say I wish the middle order did more because that would mean our top order isn’t doing well,” he explained, backing players like Nehal, Glenn, Josh, and Shashank to step up when needed.
Hopes, a former Australian pacer, also lauded the impressive showing of young Indian talent in the tournament — notably 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who scored a stunning century in a recent match.
“These kids just play a different game now. There’s no fear when they face legends like Kohli or Dhoni. Indian cricket is in a great space, especially in the shorter format,” Hopes remarked, pointing to the depth and future strength of India’s T20 setup.
With the playoffs inching closer, Wednesday’s encounter could be make-or-break for both sides, adding to the intensity of what promises to be a riveting contest.
