Newcastle, May 2: Newcastle United’s hopes of securing a Champions League spot have suffered a blow as head coach Eddie Howe confirmed that star midfielder Joelinton is unlikely to feature again this season due to a recurring knee injury.
Speaking ahead of their clash against Brighton, Howe said, “The likelihood is that it will be difficult (for Joelinton to return this season). But with Joe, you never rule him out. He’s so motivated to come back.” The 28-year-old is currently in Brazil for rest and recovery after specialists advised a break due to knee discomfort.

Joelinton, who missed last week’s 3-0 win over Ipswich, has been a pivotal figure for Newcastle. In his absence, the Magpies will rely on midfield options like Lewis Miley, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock for the remaining four fixtures.
Despite the setback, Howe remains optimistic, especially about Joe Willock stepping up. “Joe is a like-for-like replacement. He’s quick, athletic, and an excellent ball carrier. He’s already made important contributions this season, notably in the Carabao Cup,” he said.
Currently third in the Premier League, Newcastle are only two points ahead of sixth-placed Nottingham Forest. With Champions League qualification on the line, Howe emphasised the need for focus. “We’re in clear control of our destiny with four games to go. We don’t want the momentum to fade now. We believe in the team,” he added.
Howe’s performance has also earned him a nomination for the Barclays Premier League Manager of the Month for April.
