Mangaluru: WhatsApp hate post linked to Suhas Shetty murder; 1 held in digital trail

Mangaluru, May 10:Police have detained one person in connection with a provocative WhatsApp message that surfaced following the murder of Suhas Shetty, reported within the Bajpe police station limits in Mangaluru city.

According to an official release from Mangaluru City Police on Saturday, the inflammatory message was shared in a WhatsApp group titled Mangaluru Muslim Yuva Sene”shortly after the murder incident. The content of the post was deemed inciteful and in violation of the law.

Based on preliminary findings, a case has been registered under Crime No: 78/2025 at Moodbidri police station. The offence is being investigated under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with circulation of provocative material through digital platforms.

The investigation has since been transferred to the Mangaluru City CEN (Cyber Economic and Narcotics) crime police station, which will pursue the digital forensics and further leads.

Police have identified and taken into custody Mohammad Anas, a resident of Vittla in Dakshina Kannada district, as the individual who allegedly forwarded the contentious message. He is currently under interrogation, as per official sources.

The message shared had the potential to disturb public harmony and warranted immediate legal action,” said a senior police official. Authorities have confirmed that further steps will be taken based on evidence gathered in the ongoing probe.
