Rain threat over MI vs DC thriller, BCCI steps in with backup plan

Mumbai, May 21: As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 enters its most electrifying phase, all eyes are on the crucial clash between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, set to unfold at the iconic Wankhede Stadium today. With three teams having already sealed their spots in the playoffs, the fight for the fourth and final berth intensifies – but the looming threat of rain casts a shadow over the high-stakes encounter.

With several IPL 2025 matches already disrupted or abandoned due to rain, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented a robust contingency plan to minimize further impact. Starting May 20, the permitted extra time for rain-affected matches has been increased from 60 to 120 minutes. This provision, previously reserved for playoff games, will now apply to the final leg of the league stage, including tonight’s crucial MI vs DC face-off.

Additionally, the cutoff time for evening matches has been extended. Matches can now continue until 11:56 pm, an hour beyond the earlier limit of 10:56 pm, allowing more flexibility to complete at least the minimum 5 overs per side required to decide a result.

So far, IPL 2025 has witnessed four match abandonments and two shortened games due to inclement weather. With the monsoon gradually making its presence felt across the country, the BCCI’s proactive measures aim to ensure the tournament proceeds with minimal disruption.

If the match goes ahead as scheduled and Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, manage a win against Delhi Capitals, they will become the fourth team to enter the playoffs. Fans across the nation are keeping their fingers crossed, hoping the rain stays away to let the action unfold.
