Mangaluru, May 28: The monsoon has made a strong start in Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi, with the region recording an impressive 374.5 mm of rainfall over the past week. This marks an excess of 86.4% compared to the average rainfall for this period.
The monsoon arrived 12 days earlier than usual, entering the Karnataka coast on May 24. Since then, heavy showers have been lashing the region. On May 25 and 26, the rain was particularly intense and widespread, slightly reducing in strength on May 27. Despite the brief let-up, the region has witnessed relentless downpours throughout the week.

A taluk-wise comparison reveals that Beltangady taluk in Dakshina Kannada district recorded a staggering 543 mm of rainfall, against a normal of 45.6 mm—over ten times the average. Most other taluks have experienced similarly high rainfall.
In Bantwal, 554.3 mm was recorded (normal: 48.5 mm), Mangaluru – 449.5 mm (53.9), Puttur – 479.4 mm (45.6), Sullia – 387.7 mm (35.4), Moodbidri – 588.2 mm (51.8), Kadaba – 495.4 mm (42.6), Mulki – 450.5 mm (65.6), Ullal – 507.4 mm (53.9).
In Udupi district, Karkala taluk recorded 493.8 mm (45.8), Kundapur – 418.4 mm (54.8), Udupi – 473.5 mm (61.5), Byndoor – 512.7 mm (62.3), Brahmavar – 517.8 mm (56.2), Kaup – 439.6 mm (77.3), and Hebri – 462.6 mm (47.6).
These figures highlight a remarkable start to the monsoon season, with rainfall far exceeding the norm across the coastal belt.
