Mangaluru, May 30: After a week of continuous rain across the district, Thursday night witnessed a particularly intense downpour, leaving several parts of Mangaluru city inundated. Low-lying areas, including residential homes and some shops in the city centre, were flooded due to the heavy rain.
Public intervention proved crucial in Mission Street, Rao and Rao Circle, and Koppar Hitlu areas, where residents at risk were safely evacuated to secure locations by fellow citizens.

In several parts of the city, knee-deep water flowed over the roads, endangering nearby electric transformers. Despite manholes being clogged and sewage water overflowing onto roads for the past few days, the city corporation has failed to take corrective measures, alleged residents.
A massive tree was uprooted near the KSRTC bus stand on the Bejai–Kapikad road, obstructing vehicular movement and causing a major traffic disruption.
Imtiaz, president of the roadside traders’ association, blamed the authorities for the damage caused to shops. He accused the Mangaluru City Corporation of failing to take adequate precautions before the monsoon and carrying out unscientific work, which resulted in water entering commercial establishments and causing heavy losses.
Near Ambedkar Circle in Balmata, stagnant water on the roads disrupted the movement of inter-state buses and inconvenienced college students.
Adding to the disruption, a tree fell on the railway track between Mangaluru Central and Junction near Jeppu. Clearance work is underway, and only one-way train traffic is currently allowed along this route. Electric wires have also been snapped due to the incident.
Continuous heavy rain has led to landslips and flooding in low-lying areas, causing concern among residents. Shops in PVS, as well as areas in Padil and Bajal, were also inundated.
A major landslip occurred near the Jokatte panchayat, where the hillside collapsed, putting nearby houses in a dangerous condition. Local residents are worried about further soil movement, especially if the rainfall continues.
Several areas, including Jeppinamogaru, have experienced waterlogging due to the relentless downpour. Low-lying regions across the district are inundated, making movement difficult and posing risks to both property and safety.
In the outskirts of Mangaluru, at Kumpala, a Mahindra Thar and a Marut Suzuki Swift car were seen floating in floodwater before coming to a halt in the middle of the road. The incident drew the attention of the public, who gathered at the site out of curiosity.
The vehicles reportedly belong to a local resident named Sajid from Kumpala.
