Mangaluru, May 31: Mangaluru has been witnessing heavy downpours for the past week, resulting in widespread damage, flooding across the city, uprooted trees, and people scrambling to deal with the chaos caused by the relentless rain.
The torrential rain has also exposed the poor quality of road works, which appear to be unscientific. In particular, Kettikal near Vamanjoor is under the threat of collapse due to the continuous rainfall. Last year, houses located on the hilltop in the area faced problems due to a landslide, which also disrupted traffic movement.

Following the incident, the deputy commissioner and the district in-charge minister pulled up officials over the unscientific work on NH 169. However, even after a year, no permanent solution seems to have been implemented.
The protective mesh that was installed has failed, as the mud underneath has been washed away, and there are no additional safety measures in place. The continuous rainfall has once again triggered the risk of a landslide at Kettikal, affecting the flow of traffic.
Construction workers are now cutting down trees at the hilltop as a precautionary measure. Traffic congestion has been reported, and commuters heading towards the area are urged to exercise caution due to the possible threat of a land collapse.
