Kushinagar, Jun 15: In a shocking case of alleged medical negligence, a 25-year-old woman and her newborn lost their lives at a private hospital in Khadda town of Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district. The attending doctor, Dr Mohammad Sayed, has been arrested, and the hospital in question has been sealed, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The deceased, Asma Khatoon, a resident of Rampur Jungle village under Hnumanganj police station limits, was brought to Vibhrant Hospital late Friday night after she went into labour. As per her family, an operation was conducted around 11 pm and they were initially informed that both mother and baby were in stable condition.

However, tensions escalated soon after, as hospital staff allegedly began making excuses, demanding money and asking the family to arrange blood from the district hospital. As Asma’s condition worsened, the hospital staff reportedly advised her family to shift her to Gorakhpur Medical College. Tragically, both the mother and newborn died before any transfer could be made.
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the aggrieved family protested outside the hospital, placing the bodies near the gate, prompting local police intervention. Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Khadda) Mohammad Zafar, who reached the spot, stated, “We have sealed Vibhrant Hospital and arrested the accused doctor. Investigations have revealed that the hospital was operating without any valid registration.”
According to police, when confronted by the grieving family, Dr Sayed — who had claimed to be the hospital's physician — attempted to flee in his vehicle but was intercepted and taken into custody. Khadda SHO Harshvardhan Singh confirmed that a case has been registered against the doctor under applicable legal provisions, and further investigations are ongoing.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising serious concerns over the functioning of unauthorized medical facilities and the urgent need for stricter regulatory oversight.
