New Delhi, Jun 15: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has expressed deep sorrow over the helicopter crash near Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand that claimed seven lives, and has called for a thorough investigation into the incident along with stricter safety protocols for aerial pilgrimages.
Highlighting the alarming frequency of such incidents, Kharge, who also serves as Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, noted that this is the fifth helicopter crash in just six weeks, demanding accountability and action against those responsible.
“The helicopter crash in Rudraprayag is deeply painful. Seven lives have been lost. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. May they find strength in this hour of grief,” Kharge said in a social media post. He further urged both the state and central governments to conduct full investigations and ensure robust safety measures to prevent such tragedies.

Following the accident, helicopter services to Kedarnath have been suspended for two days as a precaution. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated, “Helicopter operations will remain suspended today and tomorrow until the safety of passengers can be assured.”
The accident occurred early Sunday morning when a helicopter operated by Aryan Aviation crashed near the Gaurikund forest area while en route from Kedarnath Dham to Guptkashi. All seven people onboard, including the pilot, lost their lives.
In response, authorities have suspended Aryan Aviation's services for the Char Dham Yatra with immediate effect. Additionally, two helicopters operated by TransBharat Aviation were found to have flown during similarly adverse weather conditions. The licenses of both pilots have been suspended for six months, according to officials.
The incident has reignited national concerns over the safety standards of pilgrimage-related aviation services, with mounting calls for regulatory oversight and systemic reforms.
