Puttur, Jun 19: A crocodile was sighted on the banks of the Kumaradhara river near 34 Nekkilady in Uppinangady on Wednesday evening. As crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of the reptile, it reportedly opened its mouth aggressively and retreated into the river water.

The crocodile was first spotted resting near the riverbank close to the residence of a local resident, Sheikh Haji. Children noticed the reptile from a distance and alerted the locals. When people approached the spot, the crocodile displayed aggressive behaviour by opening its mouth and then disappeared back into the river.

Similar sightings were reported in the past. Two years ago, two large crocodiles were spotted in the Netravati river near Panja. Last year as well, a large crocodile was seen along the banks of the Netravati river here. The presence of crocodiles has created fear among those who venture into the river for fishing.

Dinesh B, a member of Uppinangady's flood rescue team and home guard personnel, said that a few days ago, when the river water level was low, a group of around 10 water dogs was spotted near Kadavinabagilu in the Netravati river.

It is reported that baby fish were released into the river two years ago, which have now grown in size. Due to the abundance of fish, it is believed that water dogs are now entering the river in search of prey.

Crocodiles are often seen in Kumaradhara river. We constructed a bridge across Kumaradhara river in kadaba- yedamangala road. Our labours found Crocodiles eggs on the banks near to our construction area. Even our labours used to bath in the same river every day. When they hear human approach they dissappear with fear. Nobody is hurted so far. There are more numbers near to the construction site.

These creatures are dangerous as there are human dwellings all throughout the banks of this river. So authorities should either snare them and transfer to zoos, or eliminate them.
