Udupi, Jun 19: In a proactive move to ensure the safety of school children, the Udupi district police conducted a special vehicle inspection drive in front of schools across all seven taluks of the district on the morning of Thursday, June 19.

As per the directive issued by superintendent of police (SP) Hariram Shankar, police station heads were instructed to closely monitor school transportation. Officers and staff from respective police station jurisdictions carried out inspections near key junctions and school premises.

The campaign targeted auto-rickshaws, private vehicles, school buses, and two-wheelers transporting students. Strict action was taken against those violating safety norms—particularly vehicles found carrying more students than permitted. Two-wheeler riders transporting more than two children were issued warnings.

SP Hariram Shankar stated that the district-wide drive focused on verifying compliance with traffic and safety regulations. This included checking for overloading, valid fitness certificates, and any instances of drunk driving. He emphasized that the primary objective of the campaign is to ensure the safe commute of children to and from schools.

Speaking about the special drive, he said, "A total of 930 vehicles were checked, and 282 cases were filed for IMV violations during the special drive conducted in Udupi district on June 19. A total fine of Rs 1,58,800 was collected. One case of drunk driving was registered under the Manipal police station limits. Additionally, 48 cases of overloading, 39 cases related to lack of documents, and 194 other violations were recorded. If these violations continue, more stringent action will be taken.”

Several incidents involving school vehicles—such as accidents and wrong-side driving—have been reported in recent days. On the morning of Wednesday, June 18, a bus carrying school children was involved in a collision with a truck in Brahmavar, resulting in minor injuries to the students. In another incident, a school bus was caught driving on the wrong side of the road. The issue was promptly reported to the police department by alert citizens.

Concerned authorities should inspect the school buses on regular routine basis, not when & then accidents happened. Below are some suggestions. 1. Speed jammers to be installed in school buses to stop the reckless driving. 2. Drivers to be given special training, those who gone through the special training should be issued special driving licences. That special driving licence holder only allowed to appoint as school bus drivers. 3. Those school buses which are not comply with the safely regulations to be warned and if they continue the same, those vehicles to be confiscated. 4. GPS tracking should be installed in school buses. 5. Automated attendance system should be integrated in schools from the student boarding the bus, entering classroom, exiting from the classroom & at the end till dropping them back. This may avoid if any student went on sleep and left in the bus without notice by bus Driver or Attendant. 6. Private school transporters also should have permission from RTA for this services and they comply with all safety regulations.

Are Auto Rickshaws and Maruti Vans Safe for Transporting School Children? The safety of our children should always be our top priority. Unfortunately, in many places, including Mangalore, it's common to see school children being transported in overcrowded autos and Maruti vans, which clearly pose safety risks. If checks are going to be conducted in Mangalore too — similar to what has been done in other cities — it's a welcome step. But at the same time, we, as parents, must also take responsibility. Many of us knowingly send our children in these overloaded vehicles just for the sake of convenience or cost-saving. If we are truly concerned about our kids' safety, we should ensure they travel in properly regulated school transport with adequate safety measures. If all parents collectively stop supporting unsafe transport methods, autos and vans will no longer have the demand that encourages overloading. So yes, in a way, we must first correct ourselves before blaming the system. Let’s make a conscious choice — our children's safety is worth it.
