Mangaluru, July 3: In a concerning trend seen across India post the COVID-19 pandemic, cases of heart attacks—especially among younger individuals—are on the rise. This spike has alarmed both health experts and the general public. While several heart attack-related deaths have been reported in recent weeks in Hassan district and Mysuru, where a young entrepreneur succumbed recently, Dakshina Kannada too has now recorded a significant number of cases.
According to shocking data revealed by district health officer Dr H R Thimmayya, 85 people have died of heart attacks in Dakshina Kannada in the past six months alone. From January to June 2025, 380 heart attack cases were recorded in the district, of which 85 were fatal. The deceased include 54 men and 31 women.

Age-wise breakdown of deaths:
- 20–30 years: 1 death
- 31–40 years: 3 deaths
- 41–50 years: 18 deaths
- 51–60 years: 18 deaths
- Above 61 years: 45 deaths
Dr Thimmayya urged the public not to panic but to adopt a disciplined and healthy lifestyle. He emphasized that regular exercise, a balanced diet, and effective stress management can significantly reduce the risk of heart attacks.
Call for greater awareness:
In light of this worrisome development, the health department has called on the public to pay closer attention to their health. Initiatives are being taken to raise awareness about heart attack symptoms and to improve emergency medical response systems. Officials reiterated that this is a matter that requires urgent attention and collective responsibility towards health and well-being.
