Bantwal, July 9: In a significant development, the Karnataka High Court has refused to quash a criminal case filed against D TV Kannada, a web-based news portal, accused of circulating fake news. The portal will now face a continued police investigation.
The case dates back to June 21, 2025, when the Bantwal Rural police registered a complaint under FIR No. 73/2025 citing Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Later, a separate case — FIR No. 75/2025—was registered under Section 240 of the BNS, specifically naming D TV Kannada for allegedly publishing misleading and false content online.
In an attempt to dismiss the case, Azharuddin, a resident of Puttur, filed a petition before the Karnataka High Court seeking to have the FIR quashed. However, special public prosecutor Asmar, appearing on behalf of the state government, strongly opposed the plea during the hearing.
Following the government’s argument, the petitioner voluntarily withdrew the application, effectively allowing the case to proceed. The High Court did not grant any relief, and the case will now be investigated further by Bantwal rural police.
Officials confirmed that the legal process will continue in accordance with the law, and further updates will follow as the investigation progresses.
