Mumbai, Aug 2: Raising a strong voice in support of India’s frontline health workers, Lok Sabha MP Ravindra Waikar from Mumbai North West constituency on Friday demanded a uniform policy, salary structure, and employee status for nearly 10 lac Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) across the country.
Speaking during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Waikar called upon the central government to urgently address the long-standing concerns of ASHA workers, who have been tirelessly serving rural communities since 2005. He said their vital contributions to India’s grassroots healthcare system deserve formal recognition and protection.

Among the key demands highlighted were:
• A fixed and uniform monthly salary
• Inclusion under social security schemes like provident fund and pension
• Health and life insurance coverage for ASHA workers and their families
• Official government employee status instead of the current ‘volunteer’ tag
Waikar stressed that despite playing a crucial role in rural healthcare delivery — often during emergencies and pandemics — ASHA workers continue to face neglect and uncertainty. “While they care for the health of the entire nation, their own health and future remain insecure,” he said.
The MP pledged to continue raising their concerns in Parliament until the government acts decisively. He urged central authorities to ensure dignity, financial stability, and social security for ASHA workers who form the backbone of India's rural health infrastructure.
