Nagpur, Aug 4: Tension gripped Maharashtra’s Nagpur on Sunday evening after an allegedly drunk army officer rammed his car into a crowd, injuring 25 to 30 people, prompting an enraged mob to beat him up before police arrived at the scene.

The accused, identified as 40-year-old Harshpal Mahadev Waghmare, is currently posted with the Indian Army in Assam. He was on a four-day leave and had come to Maharashtra when the shocking incident occurred.

According to police, the mishap took place around 8:30 pm near Durga Chowk in Nagardhan, while Waghmare was driving towards Hamlapuri. He was reportedly under the influence of alcohol and driving recklessly when he lost control of the vehicle.

In a matter of seconds, his car ploughed through a group of people, overturned, and landed in a roadside drain. Eyewitnesses said panic and chaos followed as many were thrown off their feet, some sustaining injuries.

Furious locals rushed to the spot, pulled Waghmare out of the drain, and assaulted him. Videos circulating on social media show the officer bleeding and struggling to escape the crowd’s fury.

Ramtek police later reached the scene, rescued the officer, and took him to a hospital for medical treatment. He has since been taken into custody, and an investigation is underway.
