Mumbai, Aug 8: Heavy rains in the catchment areas have significantly boosted water levels in the reservoirs supplying drinking water to Mumbai. As per data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday, the combined stock in the seven major lakes now stands at 89.15 per cent of their total capacity, amounting to 12,90,256 million litres.

According to the BMC, Modak Sagar is nearly brimming at 99.82 per cent, followed by Tansa at 98.20 per cent, Middle Vaitarna at 94.41 per cent, Upper Vaitarna at 82.76 per cent, Bhatsa at 86.54 per cent, Tulsi at 84.83 per cent, and Vehar at 73.61 per cent.

Tansa, Modak Sagar, Middle and Upper Vaitarna supply water to western suburbs from Dahisar Check Naka to Bandra, and the western parts of the city from Mahim to Malabar Hill. The Bhatsa system — comprising Bhatsa, Vehar, and Tulsi lakes — caters to the eastern suburbs from Mulund Check Naka to Sion and further to Mazgaon, with treatment carried out at the Panjarpur Water Treatment Plant.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a generally cloudy sky for Friday with the likelihood of light to moderate showers or thundershowers across Mumbai and its suburbs. The Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 30.5°C and a minimum of 25.7°C, while Colaba saw a high of 28.7°C and a low of 25.2°C.

High tides are expected at 11:42 am (4.18 metres) and 11:35 pm (3.69 metres), while low tides will occur at 5:46 pm (1.18 metres) and at 5:27 am on Saturday (0.62 metres).

With water levels approaching full capacity, the city’s drinking water needs are expected to be comfortably met in the coming months.
