Mumbai, Aug 9: As Raksha Bandhan celebrations approach this Saturday, eco-friendly and handmade rakhis crafted by women artisans from Tata Power’s flagship women empowerment programme, Anokha Dhaga, are drawing widespread appreciation.
These rakhis, created under the initiative by the company that powers Mumbai, symbolize sustainable craftsmanship, rich cultural heritage, and a commitment to women’s empowerment.
Since its launch in 2015 with just 16 women artisans, Anokha Dhaga has grown into a network of 19 active centres, empowering over 25,000 women across more than 2,700 self-help groups (SHGs), fostering both economic independence and social transformation.
A Tata Power official said, “What sets this initiative apart is its inclusive model focused on margins, going beyond skill-building to champion women’s rights and empowerment. For many women, especially from remote communities previously unable to work, Anokha Dhaga has opened new doors, helping them support household expenses, care for elders, and fund their children’s education.”
Apart from festive rakhis, these women produce a wide range of handmade products including crochet bags, millet-based cookies, chocolates, candles, jackets, and home décor items, showcasing their diverse skills and creativity.
