Mumbai, Aug 10: WhatsApp has revealed that it banned over 98 lakh Indian accounts in June 2025 as part of its ongoing efforts to tackle misuse and harmful activities on the platform. According to its latest India Monthly Report, nearly 19.79 lakh accounts were taken down proactively, even before receiving any user complaints.
The platform also received 23,596 user grievances during the month, leading to action against 1,001 accounts, which included both banning new accounts and restoring previously banned ones after review.
A majority of user reports — over 16,000 — were related to ban appeals, with action taken in 756 such cases. Other complaints pertained to account support, safety issues, and product-related queries.

WhatsApp detailed that its abuse detection systems operate at three levels: during account registration, while messaging, and when receiving negative feedback like user reports and blocks. The platform emphasised proactive prevention over reactive detection.
Highlighting its commitment to user safety, WhatsApp said it leverages end-to-end encryption, in-app safety tools, and dedicated teams to combat misinformation, abuse, and security threats. It also collaborates with external experts to bolster cybersecurity and maintain election integrity.
In a separate update, WhatsApp recently launched two business-facing tools for select Android beta users — ‘Status Ads’ and ‘Promoted Channels’. The Status Ads work similarly to Instagram Story ads, appearing between personal status updates and clearly labelled as “sponsored.”
