Pune, Aug 11: A pilgrimage turned tragic on Monday morning when a pick-up truck carrying devotees to the Kundeshwar Shiva temple in Pune’s Khed taluka veered off the road and plunged into a 30-foot-deep gorge, killing at least seven women on the spot and injuring over 30 others.

The victims, all residents of Papalwadi village, were headed for darshan when the accident occurred in a ghat section. According to officials, the vehicle lost control and overturned before crashing into the valley below.

Locals rushed to the scene and began rescue operations, soon joined by police and emergency services. The injured were taken to Paith rural hospital and other nearby medical facilities. Authorities have confirmed that several women and children are among those hurt, with multiple victims reported to be in critical condition.

Pimpri-Chinchwad DCP Shivaji Pawar confirmed the death toll and added that between 25 to 35 people suffered injuries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident and announced financial aid: Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured, from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

“Saddened by the loss of lives due to an accident in Pune, Maharashtra. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon,” read a statement from the PMO.
