Mumbai, Aug 14: Noted nutritionist Anjali Mukerjee has raised concerns over declining levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) — the “good” cholesterol — in today’s population, warning that values below 40 mg/dL can make the heart more vulnerable to disease.
In a recent social media post, she pointed to modern lifestyle habits — fear of dietary fats, excessive intake of processed foods, and lack of physical activity — as key culprits. While lowering LDL (bad cholesterol) is often prioritised, Mukerjee stressed that raising HDL is equally important for cardiovascular health.
She suggested two simple lifestyle changes to help boost HDL levels naturally:
1. Exercise Every Day:
Whether it’s brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or strength training, at least an hour of movement daily can help improve HDL levels. Even 30 minutes of brisk walking can make a difference over time. “Start moving — your heart will thank you,” she said.
2. Include Healthy Fats:
Moderate consumption of good fats aids in HDL production. “A tablespoon of ghee a day can raise good cholesterol,” Mukerjee noted. Omega-3-rich foods like walnuts, flaxseeds, avocados, and perilla seeds help reduce inflammation and improve cholesterol transport.
She emphasised that swapping processed snacks for a few slices of avocado or a handful of almonds can noticeably improve the lipid profile. “Small, consistent changes can deliver big benefits for your heart,” she advised.
