Mumbai, Aug 21: Maharashtra’s political circles were abuzz on Thursday after MNS chief Raj Thackeray met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, days after Thackeray-backed candidates suffered a setback in union polls of the city’s transport and electricity body.
While the meeting triggered talk of a possible realignment ahead of the high-stakes Mumbai civic polls, Raj Thackeray clarified that discussions were limited to urban planning and traffic issues. “In cities across Maharashtra, redevelopment is taking place, traffic is rising. Today I discussed this with the Chief Minister and Mumbai Police and shared a presentation,” he said.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also dismissed political speculation, calling it a courtesy meeting. “This is part of Maharashtra’s tradition… many people meet leaders, whether in power or not. No other meaning should be drawn,” Pawar said.
The developments come weeks after Uddhav and Raj Thackeray sealed their political reunion, projecting unity in the run-up to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut had recently declared that the cousins’ alliance would deliver victory.
However, BJP leaders insist the Thackeray combine poses no major threat, pointing to the latest union poll defeat as evidence.
