Goa police launch aggressive crackdown after crime wave in South Goa

Panaji, Aug 24: A sudden spurt of crimes in South Goa – including gunfire incidents, assault on police, and an extortion bid – just ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi has prompted Goa police to swing into action with unusual aggression.

Police stations have begun rounding up history-sheeters and gang-linked suspects, keeping them in custody until the festival ends. The move, officials said, is aimed at sending a strong message that the streets belong to law enforcement, not to gangs.

“The one clear message to goons or gangs is this – only the police have the legal right to use force. Anyone else attempting it will face severe legal consequences. Goa police owns the streets, for the good of the people and to maintain law and order,” Director General of Police Alok Kumar told The Goan in his first interview since the wave of crimes.

So far, over 35 people have been detained, with more arrests expected as the crackdown intensifies. “The investigation is progressing swiftly, and strict legal action is being taken against all those involved. Trust me, the Goa police is going to dominate all areas from where such notorious elements come,” Kumar asserted.

Though the flare-up was centered in South Goa, the drive has been widened across the state with foot patrols, blockades, and surprise checks in place. Old criminal records are being reviewed, externment proceedings initiated, and preventive detentions enforced to deter potential troublemakers.

“The goal is not only to crack down on crimes but also to restore public confidence. Whatever it takes to galvanise the force will be done. I want the Goa police to walk proudly and with swag,” Kumar added.
