Panaji, Aug 29: The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP), which has successfully implemented its unique 16-way waste segregation programme across 35 colonies in the capital, is now gearing up to expand the initiative to more localities. The model, which covers residential units, hotels, and hospitals, recently found mention in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popular radio address ‘Mann Ki Baat’, where he lauded Panaji’s efforts in solid waste management.
Speaking to reporters, CCP commissioner Clen Madeira highlighted the increasing challenges in waste management owing to the surge in tourist arrivals. “People from outside Goa often litter without following rules and regulations. Our residents are cooperating and following the segregation norms, which makes it clear where the problem lies,” Madeira said.
Currently, Panaji produces nearly 42 tonnes of waste every day. Out of 100 identified colonies, only 35 have fully adopted the rigorous segregation process. Despite the challenges, CCP is determined to bring more households and establishments under its ambit.
The 16-way segregation model, introduced in 2022, classifies waste into 16 distinct categories, including paper, cardboard, batteries, medicines, glass, sharps, metals, ceramics, e-waste, cloth, soft plastics, PET and hard plastic, biomedical waste, tubes, bulbs, and coconut shells.
In his 124th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, Prime Minister Modi praised the initiative, noting the leadership of women in driving the movement. “The example of Panaji city in Goa is inspiring. Waste here is divided into 16 categories, and Panaji has even received the President’s award for its efforts. Cleanliness is not a one-time activity, but a continuous responsibility,” Modi said.
With growing recognition at the national level, CCP’s waste management model is being seen as a potential benchmark for other cities across India.
