Mumbai, Aug 29: Even as India and the US remain locked in a trade tariff dispute, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) and Meta Platforms on Friday announced a new joint venture aimed at developing India-centric artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. The partnership, unveiled at RIL’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), will focus on delivering open-source AI models to Indian businesses across sectors.
Meta Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the initiative would democratize access to AI and empower people as well as enterprises. “We believe this technology has the potential to bring a new era of personal empowerment, giving people greater agency to improve the world in all the directions they choose. Together with Reliance, we want to pair the power of open-source AI with their deep domain expertise to deliver sovereign, enterprise-ready AI for India,” Zuckerberg said.

RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani underlined the potential of the partnership, noting that the venture would combine Meta’s open models and tools with Reliance’s execution across energy, retail, telecom, media, and manufacturing. “This collaboration will help democratize AI and accelerate innovation at scale,” Ambani said.
Zuckerberg highlighted how Meta’s open-source Llama models can be tailored to suit businesses of all sizes. “With Reliance’s scale and reach, we can bring AI to every corner of India — from small start-ups in remote towns to large enterprises in the biggest cities,” he said, adding that the partnership marks “just the beginning” of building a future where every entrepreneur and creator has access to AI and, eventually, superintelligence.
Meanwhile, Alphabet Inc and Google CEO Sundar Pichai also announced a strategic partnership with Reliance, unveiling plans to establish a dedicated Jamnagar Cloud region. “It will bring world-class AI and compute from Google Cloud, powered by clean energy from Reliance and connected by Jio’s advanced network,” Pichai said, adding that Google Cloud would support Reliance’s mission-critical workloads while driving advanced AI initiatives.
With the new alliances, Reliance has positioned itself at the heart of India’s AI revolution, aiming to push innovation across industries and prepare for a future driven by artificial intelligence.
