Goa govt notifies 4% job quota for meritorious sportspersons

Daijiworld Media Network – Panaji

Panaji, Sep 9: The Goa government has formally notified a four per cent job reservation in Group C posts for meritorious sportspersons, making it mandatory for all departments to implement the quota in direct recruitment. A circular issued by the government stated that while applying the reservation, the total quota, including sports, should not exceed 50% of the vacancies.

The move is in line with the Goa Sports Policy 2009 and fulfils Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s assurance in the 2024-25 Budget that athletes from the state excelling at national and international levels would be rewarded with government jobs. The decision also comes after Goa’s encouraging performance in the National Games, where the state promised enhanced support for medal-winning sportspersons.

The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs had earlier drafted a scheme to extend government jobs to medal winners across departments. However, the Finance Department had raised concerns regarding recruitment rules and qualifications. Following this, amendments were made to clearly define eligibility, direct recruitment, and promotion norms for sportspersons entering government service under the new quota.

With this notification, the state has sought to institutionalise greater recognition and long-term support for Goan athletes.
