Beltangady, Sep 24: The Mentoring Cell of Sacred Heart College, Madanthyar, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Madanthyar and the NSS unit, organized a highly informative and impactful CPR and emergency response training programme on September 24 at college auditorium. The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of students, NSS volunteers, and faculty members, all eager to gain essential life-saving skills.
The resource person, Dr Ganga Roy, 3rd-year postgraduate student in emergency medicine at KMC Hospital, Mangaluru, conducted the session with clarity and expertise. Originally from Idukki, Kerala, Dr Ganga Roy holds certifications in BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support), and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support).

In her session, Dr Ganga Roy highlighted the significance of the DRS ABCD protocol danger, response, send for help, airway, breathing, CPR, and defibrillation while responding to emergencies. She also elaborated on handling various medical emergencies such as breathing difficulties, choking incidents, cardiac arrests, and strokes. The highlight of the programme was the hands-on CPR training, where she invited student volunteers on stage and demonstrated the procedure step by step, ensuring that the participants understood both the theory and its practical application.
Addressing the gathering, Maxim Albuquerque, president of Rotary Club Madanthyar and an alumnus of the college, spoke about the growing need for such training programmes and how they empower students to act confidently during life-threatening situations.
Prof Alex Ivan Sequeira, principal of the college, underlined the real-life applicability of the training and expressed his gratitude to the Rotary Club of Madanthyar for their partnership. He also commended the Mentoring Cell coordinator and the NSS unit for meticulously arranging the event.
The formal stage programme began with a prayer song by the students, followed by a welcome address by Nelson Monis, coordinator of the Mentoring Cell, who also later proposed the vote of thanks. Arwin ably compered the programme, ensuring smooth flow throughout.
The training programme was widely appreciated as it not only enhanced knowledge but also instilled the confidence to respond effectively in emergencies. By equipping students with these vital skills, the initiative marked an important step towards creating a community that is better prepared to save lives.
