Udupi: ICYM Pangla to host grand finale of 20th diocesan singing contest on Oct 26

Udupi, Sept 25: ICYM Pangla unit is all set for the 20th Diocesan Level Singing Contest to be held at Shankerpura on October 26.

St John, the evangelist parish, Pangla–Shankerpura has been organising the diocesan-level singing competition for the last 20 years successfully under the leadership of the vibrant and enthusiastic unit of ICYM Pangla. This year, the ICYM Pangla Unit is celebrating the golden jubilee of their association, which was formed under the patronage of late Fr Victor Saldanha in 1975.

 

Since its inception, ICYM Pangla Unit has organised hundreds of workshops, seminars, medical camps, social service programmes, singing contests and has been involved in various community services. This year, being the golden jubilee year, the ICYM Pangla has envisaged 12 events to commemorate the 50 years of its existence at the parish, and this 20th singing contest is one of the events that will provide a platform for budding singers.

The qualifying audition rounds were held for the children on Sunday, September 21, at the community hall of the parish, and over 124 enthusiastic children participated in the closely contested auditions.

The auditions for children began at 2 pm with a warm welcome accorded by ICYM president Jeevan Pereira, and vice president Vion Mathias presented roses to the judges for the audition rounds: renowned musician Patrick Pereira (Bejai), singers Wilma Pereira (Bejai) and Cliyon Antony D’Silva (Bajjodi).

The auditions were held under the able guidance and support of Pangla parish priest Dr Prakash Anil Castelino, who also later announced the names of winners who qualified for the grand finale.

These auditions were held for the age groups below 10 years (boys/girls solo), and between 10–15 years (boys and girls solo). From each category, the following ten singers from each group qualified for the Grand Finale to be held on October 26.

The audition rounds were ably and efficiently conducted by assistant priests Fr Jassyl Coutinho, Fr Rolwyn Fernandes, and ICYM animator Anitha D’Souza. Brenol Martis proposed the vote of thanks.

The other categories of the contest who will be directly participating in the grand finale on 26th October are: Children below 10 years – Group Singing, Children between 10–15 years – Group Singing, Seniors aged 15–60 years – Solo, Duet and Group Singing. This year, another category has been added to exhibit and enhance the singing talent of seniors above 60 years – solo singing.

All preparations are being made for the grand finale, which will be held at the newly renovated state-of-the-art Sabha Bhavan A/C Hall. Over the last 20 years, the ICYM Pangla unit has successfully maintained high standards in organising this prestigious singing contest, consistently inviting renowned judges from the Mangalore and Udupi Dioceses.

The organisers are expecting a large number of participants for the grand finale.
