Udupi, Sept 28: Famed as the “City of Temples,” Udupi is now casting its net wider by promoting its scenic beaches to attract global travellers.

Speaking at Malpe Beach on the occasion of World Tourism Day, deputy commissioner Swaroopa T K. said the district is stepping up efforts to boost coastal tourism through beach sports, cultural programmes, and sustainable tourism initiatives.

Launching a series of beach sports competitions organised by the district administration, Tourism Department, and District Athletic Association, the DC said Udupi’s coastline holds immense promise for both adventure and leisure tourism.

“Along with temple tourism, Udupi’s pristine beaches can attract international visitors. We plan to introduce water and air sports in the coming days,” she added.

Underlining the role of cleanliness in enhancing tourism appeal, Swaroopa said that Swachhata Saptaha drives had already been conducted at eight beaches to preserve hygiene and natural beauty. She urged the public to take active part in beach events and join hands in positioning Udupi as a model for sustainable tourism in Karnataka.

Udupi City Municipal Council president Prabhakar Poojary echoed her sentiments, stating that beach tourism would receive continued support, with more public events being planned to draw visitors while ensuring clean and safe coastal areas.

The initiative also reflects a broader push to balance tourism development with environmental responsibility.

The event was attended by Additional DC Abid Gafoor, Urban Development Authority chairman Dinakar Herur, Tourism Department assistant director Yadav, District Athletics Association president Hariprasad Rai, District Guarantee Schemes Implementation Committee chairman Ashok Kodavoor, entrepreneur Pratibha Kanchan, and other dignitaries.
