Panaji, Sep 29: Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant has called on the state’s youth to break away from the dependency on politically-backed or guaranteed government jobs, urging them instead to actively seek out opportunities in both the public and private sectors.
Addressing concerns around unemployment, Sawant challenged the narrative, asking whether joblessness in Goa is real or a matter of personal choice. He noted that ample vacancies exist, yet many young people choose not to take them up, often due to misconceptions about private sector job security.
“Young people must stop waiting for jobs to come to their doorstep through political influence,” the CM said. “The government cannot bring jobs home. It is up to individuals to attend job fairs, apply, and build careers on their own merit.”

Citing recent data, Sawant pointed out that around 9,000 apprentices landed government jobs last year, while another 8,000 found employment in the private sector. Of those registered with the state’s employment exchange, he noted that 50% are still studying, 30% are already employed in private jobs but remain listed as unemployed, and only 20% are truly unemployed—but many are unwilling to work.
Sawant emphasized the need for a shift in mindset, particularly among Goan youth who continue to view private jobs as unstable. He encouraged them to embrace available opportunities across sectors instead of waiting indefinitely for politically secured government roles.
“The opportunities are out there,” Sawant said. “It’s time for our youth to meet them halfway.”
