The deceased has been identified as Apsa Bhanu Shifanaj, daughter of Sheikh Mustafa and Gulzar Bhanu, residents of Hirgana village in Karkala.

According to police sources, Shifanaj had expressed her wish to visit Udupi to meet Mohammad Saleem, with whom she was reportedly in love. Her mother, Gulzar Bhanu, objected to this and, in a fit of rage, allegedly strangled her daughter.
