Guwahati, Oct 8: In a major development in the probe into the death of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, the CID on Wednesday arrested his cousin and Assam Police Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sandipan Garg.

According to CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, Sandipan Garg’s arrest marks the fifth detention in the high-profile case. “We have arrested Sandipan Garg. Now, we are completing the necessary legal formalities,” Gupta said.

Sandipan Garg, who was present with the singer during the alleged drowning incident in Singapore last month, had been interrogated several times over the past few days before his arrest.

The officer was produced before a local court, and the CID said it will seek his police remand for further questioning.

Earlier, authorities had arrested North East India Festival chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma, and two band members — Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta — all of whom are currently in police custody.

Zubeen Garg, a beloved figure in Assam’s music industry, died on September 19 in Singapore while swimming in the sea. He had travelled to the island nation to attend the 4th edition of the North East India Festival, organised by Shyamkanu Mahanta and his company.

The sudden death of the 52-year-old singer has shocked millions of his fans and continues to raise questions, with the CID intensifying its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
