Puttur, Feb 15: The recovery of the body of a woman in a pond near her house at Uruvalupadavu near Uppinangady in the taluk on Sunday February 12 night has given rise to suspicions that the woman had been murdered. Although the family members claim this to be a case of suicide, the locals think otherwise.

Naseema (24), daughter of Abubakker from Uruvalupadavu, had married Abdulla from Mogralputtur near Kasargod. Her body was found from a pond in the plantation hear her home on Sunday night. Although the initial reaction was that it was murder, the woman’s father, Abubakker, in his complaint to Uppinangady police station later, said that his daughter had committed suicide.

“My daughter, Naseema had married Abdulla four years back. As my son-in-law did not make arrangements for her separate stay, she continued to stay with us. Her husband visited us often. She had a two-year-old baby, and her husband started pestering her for additional dowry. Since the last three years, he did not visit my daughter, but continued to pressurize her for dowry over phone. Frustrated over these calls, Naseema jumped into the pond and ended her life,” Abubakker said to the police.

The people however point out that the body of Naseema found in the pond had been scantily clad. Prima facie, this does not appear to be a case of suicide, they say. Some locals said the incident smacks of the fallout of a recent incident involving a local youth, and hence, demanded detailed investigation.
