BJP alleges Congress using foreign social media accounts to spread fake narratives

New Delhi, Nov 27: BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra on Thursday accused the Congress party, Rahul Gandhi, and Left parties of orchestrating a “sinister” campaign to defame India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi through false narratives since 2014. Patra alleged that they collaborated with foreign-based social media accounts to advance this agenda.

Speaking at a press conference at BJP headquarters, Patra claimed that fake and manipulated accounts from countries such as West Asia and Singapore were being used to circulate misleading content within India. He pointed to certain Congress state unit X (formerly Twitter) accounts and senior leader Pawan Khera’s account as examples of foreign-linked activity, in contrast to the BJP, which he said strictly adheres to indigenous practices.

“The INC Maharashtra account previously showed Ireland before it was switched to India. INC Himachal appears linked through a Thailand-based Android app, and Pawan Khera’s account shows the United States,” he said, adding that these revelations came after X rolled out a new feature allowing users to identify account locations.

Patra also cited examples of India-based accounts with foreign operations spreading false information. He mentioned creator Arpit Sharma, whose Europe-based account shared misleading content about vote irregularities, and Dr Kalika, whose Singapore-based account posted fabricated images claiming the arrest of the Indian Election Commissioner.

The BJP spokesperson alleged that these accounts, along with Rahul Gandhi and his social media team, fueled unrest following the Election Commission’s implementation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar. He accused the Congress and Left parties of leveraging foreign sources to propagate distorted narratives aimed at undermining national interests.
