Mangalore: Employees Protest Move to Privatize NMPT

Mangalore, Feb 19: The general body meeting of Canara Port Workers Union expressed deep concern over the proposal to privatize New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT)with effect from April 1 this year.

The members noted that the privatization move relating to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust Mumbai had been shelved because of stiff opposition from locals, but expressed anguish at the preparations being made by the union ministry for shipping towards privatization of this port.

State president of Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), N M Adyantaya, who presided over the meeting, blamed the officials for failing to convene meetings of all the employees’ federations to discuss privatization issue as per instructions. He expressed anger at the fact that the issue of privatization had not been moved in NMPT board meeting.  “INTUC will oppose the privatization proposal tooth and nail, as it is against the interests of workers. All the employees unions need to come together to oppose this move,” he said.

Working president of the union, Rakesh Malli, and general secretary, P M Sukumar, were present. Hemendra welcomed. Abubakker proposed vote of thanks.
