Syria hails permanent end to US Caesar sanctions, eyes investment boom

Damascus, Dec 20: Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa on Friday welcomed the permanent lifting of US Caesar sanctions, calling it a historic step that paves the way for international investments in the war ravaged nation.

The sanctions, imposed under former President Bashar al Assad, restricted foreign investment and blocked Syria from the global banking system for over 14 years. Al Sharaa, in the first post on his official X account, said, “Today is the first day that Syria is without sanctions, thanks to God Almighty, and then to your efforts and patience for 14 years.”

He extended special thanks to US President Donald Trump and the US Congress, highlighting their role in responding to Syrian appeals and recognising the country’s sacrifices. Trump had previously suspended the sanctions twice in response to requests from Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry described the move as an “entrance to the phase of reconstruction and development,” urging Syrians at home and abroad to actively contribute to national recovery efforts. Officials said the permanent removal of restrictions is expected to boost foreign investments, unlock reconstruction projects, and accelerate economic revival in a country long battered by conflict.
