Bantwal, Dec 23: Vittal police have taken into custody a police station staff member and a passport applicant for allegedly creating fake documents to obtain a passport and Police Clearance Certificate (PCC).
According to police, an individual identified as Shaktidas had applied for a passport in February 2025. However, during police verification, the application was rejected after the address did not match, resulting in an adverse report. Shaktidas later submitted a fresh passport application in June.

During the second application process, Vittal police station staff member Pradeep allegedly prepared a fake verification report without bringing the matter to the notice of the concerned beat staff, Sabu Mirji. The report was prepared in Sabu Mirji’s name, and his signature was forged. The fabricated report was then recommended by senior officers and forwarded to the central office, enabling the applicant to obtain both the passport and the police clearance certificate.
It is further alleged that the original documents were destroyed in an attempt to prevent the irregularities from coming to light.
The matter surfaced on December 19 during a review of office records, which revealed the forged signature and destruction of documents. Legal action has been initiated against both the accused.
Police personnel Pradeep was taken into custody by Vittal police and produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
Shaktidas, during interrogation, stated that he is a resident of West Bengal. This claim is being verified, and further legal action will be taken against him accordingly, informed police.
The accused has listed a West Bengal address on his Aadhaar card. Authorities from police station have already taken him into custody and have contacted his relatives in West Bengal to inform them of the development.
The relatives are now travelling from West Bengal to the police station. At this stage of the investigation, there is no evidence to suggest that the accused is a citizen of Bangladesh, and police continue to verify his identity as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Meanwhile, Vittal police station staff member Pradeep, has been suspended from departmental duties with effect from December 22.
