Brahmavar, Dec 25: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has taken over the probe into the alleged assault on a young woman, Akshata Poojary, in Brahmavar, as well as the cases filed against her for obstructing police duties, said Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar.
“Three police officers facing allegations have been placed on leave. We proposed transferring the matter to CID to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation,” Shankar told reporters.

Earlier, the case filed against Akshata at Brahmavar police station for allegedly obstructing police duty, along with complaints lodged against the police officers involved, had been transferred to Manipal police station. The move follows growing public concern after the alleged incident sparked protests by local organisations outside the Brahmavar police station.
The incident traces back to a 2014 accident case involving Malpe resident Ashik, who was sentenced by the court to pay Rs 20 lac along with interest. Ashik had neither appeared in court nor paid the amount, prompting the court to order his arrest and production.
Police had gone to Akshata Poojary’s house, as she was associated with Ashik, to execute the arrest order. It was during this visit that the alleged assault on her reportedly occurred, igniting widespread public attention.
Shankar emphasised that the CID will conduct a thorough and fair investigation into both the alleged assault on Akshata and the claims of obstruction of duty against her, ensuring accountability on all sides.
