Hammonton, Dec 29: One person was killed and another sustained critical injuries after two helicopters collided midair near the Hammonton Municipal Airport in New Jersey on Saturday morning, authorities said.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the crash occurred at around 11.25 am local time when the two helicopters collided in midair near the airport, located about 34 miles outside Philadelphia. The helicopters involved were identified as an Enstrom F-28A and an Enstrom 280C. The FAA said that only the pilots were on board the aircraft at the time of the incident.

Hammonton Police Chief Kevin Friel said police received reports of an aviation crash involving two helicopters. Both aircraft crash-landed following the collision, and one of the helicopters caught fire.

“There is confirmed one fatality at this point and one subject transported by EMS with critical, life-threatening injuries,” Friel said, adding that local police, fire and emergency personnel worked to extinguish the blaze.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the crash. Local fire officials have urged residents to avoid the area to allow emergency crews to operate safely.

Acting New Jersey Governor Tahesha Way said in a statement that her office has been briefed on the incident.

The crash marks another aviation-related incident reported in 2025, coming days after a series of fatal air accidents across the United States.
