Mangaluru: Srinivas University hosts guest talk on antibiotic resistance

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jan 1: The Institute of Allied Health Sciences (IAHS) at Srinivas University organised a guest lecture for faculty members on the theme “Antibiotic Resistance: Current Scenario and Its Implications” as part of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2025.

The session was held in Room No. 322 of the Engineering Building and coordinated under the guidance of Prof Pavana Krishnamoorthy, dean of IAHS, with Dr Vijaya Doddangoudar as convener and Dr Chaithra K as co-convener.

The lecture was delivered by Dr Sweetha Nayak, associate professor of Microbiology at SIMS-RC, Mukka, who shared her extensive academic and clinical insights into the growing global challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Dr Nayak highlighted the rapid escalation of AMR, its causes and consequences, and emphasized the urgent need for preventive measures, rational antibiotic use, and robust surveillance strategies.

The programme began with a welcome address by Dr Vijaya Doddangoudar, followed by a speech from Prof Pavana Krishnamoorthy, who underscored the importance of AMR awareness in healthcare education. Dr. Chaithra K explained the objectives of the session in the context of global health priorities.

Dr. Nayak’s lecture provided faculty members with a comprehensive understanding of the current national and international AMR scenario, factors contributing to drug misuse, clinical and societal implications of resistance, preventive strategies, stewardship programs, and the role of diagnostic microbiology. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Naveen Bappanadu.

The event included interactive discussions, a Q&A session, and awareness activities on AMR stewardship, with participants receiving e-certificates for their involvement. Faculty members gained a deeper understanding of antibiotic mechanisms, resistance evolution, and the clinical, social, and economic impact of AMR. They were also motivated to implement evidence-based practices and promote responsible antibiotic use in their professional roles.

The guest talk reinforced the relevance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 on good health and well-being and SDG 4 on quality education, by enhancing faculty awareness of global AMR trends, WHO guidelines, and diagnostic advancements.

Overall, the session successfully enriched the knowledge of IAHS faculty, highlighted the urgency of combating antimicrobial resistance, and promoted global health and educational priorities, marking a significant contribution to World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2025.
