Vikas Khanna flags health concern over worn-out carpets at Mumbai airport

Mumbai, Jan 3: Celebrity chef Vikas Khanna, who is currently in India promoting the latest season of MasterChef India, has drawn attention to a health and hygiene issue at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

While travelling from New York to Mumbai, Khanna shared a photograph from inside the airport terminal showing a visibly worn-out carpet. Expressing concern, he described the carpet as a potential health hazard, especially given the heavy daily footfall at the airport.

In his social media post, Khanna said that although he deeply respects the efficiency of Mumbai airport, the presence of such carpets was “absolutely unnecessary and unacceptable”. He pointed out that the carpet appeared to be beyond cleaning and could pose serious risks to passengers suffering from asthma and bronchitis. “It can lead to serious breathing issues and also be fatal,” he warned, urging authorities to consider removing it.

Several social media users supported Khanna’s concern, with many agreeing that the issue had finally been highlighted and hoping it would lead to corrective action.

Responding to the post, officials from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport acknowledged the concern and assured prompt action. In a reply, the airport authorities said the matter had been shared with the relevant teams and that appropriate corrective measures, including thorough cleaning and necessary steps, would be taken on priority, keeping passenger health and comfort in mind.
