Neena Gupta reflects on late success, owns career mistakes

Mumbai, Jan 6: Veteran actor Neena Gupta, who has been widely praised for her performances in recent films, has candidly spoken about finding success late in her career and taking responsibility for the choices that shaped her journey.

Though films like Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri and Metro… In Dino failed to make a strong impact at the box office, Neena Gupta emerged as the standout performer in both. Her screen presence, acting finesse and effortless style drew attention, often eclipsing younger co-stars. Audiences and critics alike noted that her roles left a lasting impression, even when the films themselves received mixed responses.

These performances are part of what Neena describes as her “second innings”, which began with the 2018 hit Badhaai Ho. Despite debuting in 1982 at the age of 23, widespread recognition came to her only after she entered her 50s.

In an interview with Humans of Bombay, Neena admitted she often wonders why success arrived so late. “I keep thinking—what did I do wrong that I got my due so late? Mostly, it has been my fault. But there’s no point thinking about the past now. Whatever work is coming my way at this age is quite nice,” she said, adding that she no longer dwells on missed opportunities from her younger years.

Speaking with rare honesty, she acknowledged moments of self-doubt. “Sometimes I feel I could have done a better job than many heroines today, even looked better. These thoughts do come, but what’s the point?” she remarked.

Neena took full responsibility for her career decisions, admitting that impatience, low self-esteem and lack of guidance affected her growth. “I didn’t have a godmother or godfather. I didn’t understand that this industry is a business. I didn’t know the rules of the game,” she said.

Reflecting on her debut film Saath Saath, where she played a supporting role, Neena called it her biggest mistake. “That film took away my chance of being seen as a leading heroine. Once you accept your mistakes, you become less bitter. Otherwise, you keep blaming the world,” she said, adding that acceptance and moving on is the only way forward.
