Puttur, Jan 7: More than 900 arecanut saplings were reduced to ashes after an electricity line snapped and fell on a plantation at Boodiyaru in Kuriya village on Tuesday.
The plantation belongs to Boodiyaru resident Ganesh Rai. The saplings, which had been planted about a year ago, were reported to be growing well.
According to sources, the power line snapped suddenly on Tuesday afternoon. The fallen wire sparked a fire, which quickly spread across the plantation, burning the saplings completely. Irrigation pipes installed in the field were also entirely damaged in the incident.

The total loss caused by the fire is estimated to be over Rs 5 lac.
