Porvorim, Jan 14: As the Goa legislative assembly took up the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address, Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral strongly pitched for his constituency to be declared the headquarters of the newly notified Kushavati district, citing its strategic and central location.
Participating in the debate, Cabral said Curchorem, being centrally located within Kushavati, was best suited to house the district headquarters. He also urged the government to explore the introduction of a ferry service between Khamamol in Curchorem and Panaji, stating that the move would significantly cut travel time for commuters and serve as a step forward in developing inland waterways in the state.

However, the discussion witnessed sharp criticism from the opposition benches, with Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira leading the attack on what he described as glaring omissions in the Governor’s address.
Ferreira said the address failed to mention the 10-point charter of demands submitted by former high court judge Justice Ferdino Rebello, which, according to him, contained key recommendations vital for the state’s governance.
Raising concerns over the law and order situation in Goa, the Aldona MLA said the Governor’s speech was silent on concrete measures to tackle the issue. He also pointed out that pressing matters such as illegal sand mining, conversion of salt pans and alleged corruption in government offices were not addressed.
“The manner in which the Mhadei issue is being handled is very sad. The Governor has not been able to address the matter effectively,” Ferreira said.
Several other MLAs also took part in the discussion on the motion of thanks, voicing their views on governance and development issues facing the state.
