Mangaluru: Govt School runs night classes to boost SSLC results

Mangaluru, Feb 4: Government school students in the outskirts of Mangaluru are now attending night classes to improve SSLC exam performance. Baikampady Meenakal Government High School has introduced this initiative for 45 SSLC students, who study from 8:15 am until 9 pm, combining regular lessons with supervised extra study sessions.

The school has 171 students from grades 8 to 10 and 11 teachers. Around 95% of SSLC students are children of migrant workers from northern Karnataka, whose parents work in fisheries, municipal services, and other labour-intensive jobs. Previously, students leaving school around 4 pm would spend time playing or wandering due to lack of supervision and study facilities at home.

The programme, launched last year, has already shown results. Forty students achieved high marks, and in the English medium section, Vinod Chandappanavar scored 612 out of 625, setting a record in Dakshina Kannada district.

“There are effectively no holidays for SSLC students. They wake up at 5 am, study at home until 6:30 am, and then continue lessons at school until 9 p.m., with breaks and light refreshments,” said N D Ajjaya, Headmaster. “Parents had previously cited lack of facilities and late work hours as obstacles. With their approval, we implemented night classes so students could study in a focused environment.”

The initiative is supported by teachers, the Mogaveera Mahasabha, the school alumni association, and the School Development Committee. Student Chaitra said, “It is a privilege to study from 8 am to 9 pm here. The special classes help us learn better, and meals and all facilities are provided, making it very convenient.”
