Australia name XI for Bangladesh Test, Renshaw returns after three-year gap

Mackay, Aug 21: Australia have announced their playing XI for the second and final Test against Bangladesh, with Matthew Renshaw returning to the side after nearly three years and veteran spinner Nathan Lyon included in the line-up.

The second Test is scheduled to begin on Friday, August 22, at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.

Renshaw, who has played 14 Tests for Australia, last featured in the longest format in 2023 against India. He is expected to open the innings in Mackay, with his inclusion being the only change to Australia's XI from the opening Test.

Australia have opted for a bowling attack featuring both pace and spin, with Lyon coming into the XI as the specialist spinner.

The hosts will be looking to level the series after Bangladesh secured a historic victory in the first Test in Darwin. The result gave Bangladesh a 1-0 lead and put Australia under pressure ahead of the series finale.

Australia captain Pat Cummins had earlier indicated that the team management was considering whether to field four fast bowlers or include a spinner for the second Test.

Cummins acknowledged that Australia were below their best in the opening match but praised Bangladesh for their performance.

"They're a really good cricket team," Cummins said, adding that the pitch appeared to become better for batting as the match progressed.

Australia will now look to bounce back and force a series draw, while Bangladesh will aim to build on their historic win and secure a series triumph.

Australia XI: Matthew Renshaw, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Beau Webster, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.
