Mangaluru: Srinivas University IAHS NSS joins Swachhta Abhiyan drive along Mukka–Baikampady highway

Mangaluru, Feb 9: The National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of the Institute of Allied Health Sciences (IAHS), Srinivas University, actively participated in a Swachhta Abhiyan organised on February 1, along the Mukka–Baikampady Highway in the Surathkal region.

The cleanliness drive was organised by the Surathkal Sports and Cultural Seva Trust in association with the Surathkal police station and Srinivas University – NSS Unit, Institute of Allied Health Sciences, with additional support from Srinivas Institute of Engineering and Technology (SIET). The programme was conducted from 7 am to 11 am, covering areas from Surathkal bus stop and Govinda Raj Circle to Mukka and extending up to Baikampady.

The event commenced at 6.45 am from the Surathkal police station, where volunteers were provided with head caps, gloves and masks before beginning the drive. The programme concluded at Baikampady at around 11 am. The initiative was coordinated by Pramod Kumar, superintendent of police, Surathkal police station, representatives of the Surathkal Sports and Cultural Seva Trust, and Amrut R H, NSS programme officer, IAHS.

The Swachhta Abhiyan aimed to promote awareness about cleanliness and public hygiene among NSS volunteers and the community, encourage community participation in maintaining a clean environment, support the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, inculcate a sense of social responsibility among NSS volunteers, and improve cleanliness along the Mukka–Baikampady highway stretch.

More than 100 NSS volunteers from IAHS and SIET participated in the programme. The event also witnessed the presence of the Dean of SIET, faculty members, and committee coordinators from the Surathkal police station and the Surathkal Sports and Cultural Seva Trust.

During the drive, volunteers actively engaged in cleaning activities, including the removal of waste from roadsides and public areas along the highway. On behalf of IAHS, Amrut R H, NSS Programme officer and associate professor, Department of Public Health, along with 25 NSS volunteers from IAHS, Srinivas University, participated with enthusiasm. The volunteers worked in close coordination with members of the organising bodies and local authorities, ensuring systematic and effective execution of the programme, while also spreading awareness among the public about the importance of cleanliness and hygiene.

The Swachhta Abhiyan was organised through the joint efforts of the Surathkal Sports and Cultural Seva Trust, Surathkal Police Station, and Srinivas University – NSS Unit, Institute of Allied Health Sciences. NSS participation from IAHS included Amrut R H, NSS programme officer and associate professor, Department of Public Health, and 25 NSS volunteers from the Institute of Allied Health Sciences.

The programme resulted in the successful cleaning of the Mukka–Baikampady highway stretch, increased public awareness regarding cleanliness and hygiene, active community engagement and teamwork, an enhanced sense of civic duty and leadership among NSS volunteers, and strengthened collaboration between academic institutions, police authorities, and community organisations.

The Swachhta Abhiyan emerged as a meaningful and impactful initiative highlighting the importance of collective responsibility towards environmental cleanliness. The active participation of NSS volunteers from IAHS reflected their commitment to social service and nation-building, contributing effectively to the goal of a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable society.
